Overview

Industrial partners will test these formulations in construction panels and validate them against industry requirements. The sustainability metrics of the CIRCULAR-C products will be assessed, and a digital product passport (DPP) will be developed to accompany the lifecycle of all development stages with particular focus on disassembly, recycling, and remanufacturing of the panels. The results will be promoted and widely disseminated. Through these efforts, CIRCULAR-C will increase the capacity of bio-based sectors by maximizing residue valorization and material recycling, as well as minimizing environmental and climate impact.

Summary

CIRCULAR-C aims to transform the bio-based chemical sector for construction applications by developing a new generation of circular, sustainable, and bio-based adhesives, coatings, and functionalized fibres.

These new formulations for wood panel construction (used in flooring, furniture, and insulation) featuring reversible chemical bonds and digital product passports enhance recycling and reduce environmental impact.

This research and innovation project will validate and optimize the use of mixed sustainablebiomass residues as feedstock to produce high-strength functionalized  cellulosic materials as well as circular adhesives and coatings with high bio-based content, fire retardancy and reversibility.

Objectives

The objectives of CIRCULAR-C focus on developing an innovative circular biorefining process that turns residual biomass into sustainable, high‑performance components designed for products that can be reassembled whenever needed. A Digital Product Passports brings transparency to the entire value chain, enabling full traceability and lifecycle management.

The project’s objectives are:

1. Biorefining of mixed sustainable biomass residues validated at TRL5

2. High-strength functionalised cellulosic fibre material produced at TRL5 as well as Circular adhesives and coatings with high biobased content and reversibility produced at TRL 5

3. CIRCULAR-C formulations in construction panels validated at TRL5 by industrial partners

4. Targeted disassembly of circular panels validated at TRL 5

5. Digital product passport developed for CIRCULAR-C products

6. Safety, circularity and sustainability of the CIRCULAR-C process and products assessed

7. Project outcomes are effectively disseminated, and economic feasibility is validated
