Welcome to Circular-C
Novel biobased formulations for CIRCULAR Construction
CIRCULAR-C is a project funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe
research and innovation programme. It is developing a new generation of
circular, sustainable and bio-based adhesives, coatings and functionalised
fibres. These novel formulations can be used in construction materials, such as
wood panels for flooring, insulation, and furniture. By exploring secondary
markets and introducing digital product passports, the project is paving the
way for recyclable, transparent and safe solutions in Europe’s built
environment.
The project covers the entire value chain:
Generation
Sustainable feedstock selection and biorefining into key platform chemicals and tailored lignin.
Formulation
Development of novel fibres, adhesives, nanocellulose, and bio based coatings for construction applications.
(Re)Assembly
Integration of CIRCULAR-C materials in flooring, furniture, and insulation panels, including ligninbased insulating foams.
Disassembly & Recyclability
Smart design for circular use, enabling recovery, recycling, and secondary markets.
Production Information Systems
Digital tools for product passports and data carriers to ensure transparency across the lifecycle.
Safe & Sustainable by Design
Assessments of economic, environmental, health, and social aspects to guarantee scalable, responsible innovation.
Communication & Exploitation
Engaging industry, policymakers, and endusers to accelerate impact and foster replication.

Key facts
By uniting leading research, industry partners, and stakeholders, CIRCULAR-C tackles one of the biggest barriers to wood fibre recycling — adhesive contamination. Replacing conventional ureaformaldehyde systems with safe, biobased formulations, the project aims for climatefriendly, circular, and highquality solutions in Europe’s built environment.
